pairs, chains. Gram-positive bacilli, small, diphtheroid,
medium, branched. Gram-negative coccobacilli. Morphology
suggests polymicrobial infection from mouth flora.
Impression: polymicrobial infection, oropharyngeal flora.

microscopy, HPV. Purulence, heavy. Gram-positive cocci,
chains. Gram-negative coccobacilli, large masses.
Morphotype suggests mixed infection with streptococci
and anaerobic gram-negative coccobacilli. Impression:
polymicrobial infection, aerobic and anaerobic species.

Trichomonas vaginalis

microscopy, MPV. Purulence, heavy. Gram-positive cocci,
pairs. Gram-negative coccobacilli. Gram-negative filaments.
Trichomonads (arrow; Trichomonas vaginalis; compare with
Fig 4). Impression: trichomoniasis with mixed aerobic and
anaerobic bacterial flora.

T. vaginalis

microscopy, MPV. Purulence, heavy. Gram-positive cocci,
pairs. Gram-negative coccobacilli. Gram-negative filaments.
Trichomonads (arrow; T. vaginalis). Impression:
trichomoniasis with mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial
flora.

S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae
Fig 5.  Eye, vitreous aspirate, smear, Gram stain, light
microscopy, MPV. Purulence, moderate. Gram-positive
diplococci, encapsulated, lancet-shaped. Gram-negative
bacilli, small, pleomorphic. Morphotype suggests mixed
infection with S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae. Impression:
vitritis, mixed infection.

MPV. Purulence, heavy. Gram-negative bacilli, medium.
Gram-positive cocci, pairs. Impression: enteric bacillary
infectious disease.
